adidas Originals, both through their general releases and their partnerships, has gradually put sustainability into practice, crafting a set of vegan Stan Smiths with Stella McCartney as well as an equally conscious range of white-dressed trainers. The imprint’s latest collaborative project, which effectively broadcasts the same green ethos to a larger audience, taps the veritably popular Sean Wotherspoon for a colorful Superstar more appropriately referred to as the “SUPEREARTH.”

A mosaic of past Superstars, the collaboration started as many of Wotherspoon’s projects do. “My creative process usually starts with me digging into my memory, looking at my personal vintage pieces, and just resurfacing references that I can build off of for the particular project,” he states. “For this project we started with the adidas Superstar as a base and I did my best to find pieces of Superstar’s own history to elevate my creative process. Staying true to the roots and then layering what I value now was all a part of the process of designing the shoe.”

The culmination of a number of considered changes, the SUPEREARTH is essentially the Superstar reconstructed from the ground up and removed entirely of all animal ingredients. Everything from the tooling to the upper is tweaked for the better, while the accents atop play on Wotherspoon’s significantly loud and heavily expressive brand of design. Floral drawings of his own making are sprawled atop with embroidered threads, referencing the Y-3 Super Position quite heavily; then, to celebrate by way of branding, the pair and its packaging are finished with special insignia — “SUPEREARTH” text, petal-accented peace signs, and tongue-placed portraits of Earth the most significant. And though loud, each of the aforementioned details only exist to support the overarching construction: an entirely mindful vegan leather center piece that’s paired well with 100% recycled polyester lining, reused Ortholite sockliners, natural rubber composed outsoles, vegan glues, and paper-made laces.
